The goal of the project was to adapt a two-bedroom apartment into a space that would meet the functional needs of a large family and contribute to their living comfort.

The apartment is located in a recently renovated building on Travessa Pedras Negras, a distinctly quiet street perpendicular to one of the best-known streets in Lisbon’s Baixa Pombalina – Rua Madalena – zone of bourgeois buildings built after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

This particular apartment is characterized by restored frescoes from different periods – in fact, it is the only space with these characteristics in the entire building.

The transformation project was wholly based on the premise of honoring the past and history of the building, leaving the frescoes not only intact but also presenting them as the main point of interest in the space, deserving to be seen and appreciated.

The house decoration was created entirely with these iconic walls in mind, thus, made to be low-key and elegant, comprising an eclectic collection of pieces which reflects the personality of the homeowners. Many chosen elements come from local artists and brands, some of which were custom-made: wool curtains from Serra de Estrela; a tile mural depicting a map of wine regions in Portugal, custom handmade by a historic tile house; or the painting in the living room, specifically created for this space by artists from the city of Caldas da Rainha.

We decided also to make use of the space of the old chimney and transform it into a headboard niche. Taking advantage of the high-ceiling niche next to the chimney, we were able to incorporate a double bunk bed with a generous wardrobe below.

The guest bathroom was imbued with a new look via the introduction of elements such as a large mirror with rounded corners, a countertop and wall covering in stone Amarelo de Negrais and a yellow vanity cabinet. These changes provide a more personal feeling to this compartment, bringing with them a reinterpretation of the historical context also to this part of the apartment.

We created modern furniture pieces using contemporary materials and a timeless design for this project. They were carefully crafted to enhance the atmosphere and ensure comfort for those using the space. The decoration also includes multiple details that, despite being inspired in different eras, give the space a unique aesthetic.

By bringing together a wide variety of colors, shades, lines and textures, while at every point having in mind the best dialogue with the surrounding frescoes, this project presents a diverse combination of elements wherein the new designs and materials respect and highlight the history and tradition of the space.
